BUDGET RATIONALE
Why these meals: This week at Lidl you get a different protein every night, starting Monday with a slow-roasted SMITHFIELD pork shoulder butt roast (3 lbs for $4.47), followed by a hearty ground beef and kidney bean chili on Tuesday. Wednesday is pan-seared colossal shrimp with fusilli (the shrimp are $7.99), and Thursday is a chicken sausage and pesto pasta bake, so the two pasta nights still taste very different. The 5 lb pack of yellow potatoes at $2.99 covers two nights, roasted alongside the pork on Monday and mashed and pan-crisped for the salmon cakes on Friday. Since the pork needs about 3 hours in the oven, you may want to roast it the day before and reheat it, or get it started by mid-afternoon.
